    1. Happy New Year to you too, the plant is a snowdrop, beautiful white, tiny bellflowers. I hope the first ones are open to this month’s GBBD, then you can see them :-)

We have one winter storm after the other but I try to enjoy the few days in between when the weather is nice.

  5. Happy New Year to you, too! I added more hellebore to my garden this fall and I'm hoping I finally have some flowers this year. I don't think I have the same one you do but since some are seedlings from a friend, I don't know what color they'll be.

    1. Happy New Year to you too! Hellebores are great and especially seedlings, I have 20 I made last year, I can’t wait to see what colour the flowers will be – in 2-3 years time! I have white, cream, pink, purple, black and several speckled hellebores, not sure how many in total, I love them all :-)

    1. Thanks Beth, as soon as Christmas is over, I start thinking about spring and can’t get it here soon enough. It is lovely to see the spring bulbs sticking out of the ground everywhere – even the tulips have started to show now in my garden.
Happy New Year to you too!

    1. Thanks Margeuerite, yes I feel fortunate and still haven’t really got used to what I can grow here in London. My sister has 5’ snow in her garden in Norway! She is always very jealous at this time of year…
Happy New Year to you too!

I had to change my header as it said ‘Merry Christmas’ so I thought a header with hellebores and snowdrops was the most appropriate right now :-)

  11. Oh my goodness! Hellebores already! Now I am truly jealous. ;-) The promise of Hellebores helps me to make it through the winter. We still have at least two months of it ahead of us, so I will have to enjoy spring in cyberspace until then. Happy New Year!

    1. And Happy New Year to you too Beth!
My hellebores are spread out in a shady and sunny area so they bloom over a long period, some are just barely peeping out of ground and some are in full flower. Hopefully this mild weather will continue, still no frost in my garden, just a LOT of rain. The winter storms are still queuing up out in the Atlantic to batter us with more rain and wind. Today we had a thunder and hail storm when I was at the hospital, was almost a bit scary as it was extremely noisy!

  13. Oh my, are these really blooming and budding right now? How wonderful! We're under a blanket of snow with frigid temps on the way--it will be awhile before we see anything green here. Love the freckled Hellebore! Best wishes for a Happy New Year!

    1. Thanks Carolyn, I haven’t added any autumn flowering snowdrops yet, I know you have some - would like some but when the spring flowering start as early as this I haven’t really felt that much need to buy any yet. Many of my autumn flowers are still going strong, all the fuchsias are still in flower…. there is no break in my garden.
Happy New Year to you too!

  15. Is it spring already there? Lucky you! Here (Northern US) we have several feet of snow and below zero temps. Keep the photos coming - they remind me that there is earth somewhere under all that ice. Happy New Year!

Winter tends to start late here, often in February, but it doesn’t last very long and if we get snow it will usually be gone after a day or two. I have experienced winters without frost, but most winters there has been a few days here and there below zero. Last winter was exceptional with weeks on end with very cold weather. Looks like this winter will be much more normal – it just rains and rains and rains…
Come back on the 15th this month, I hope to have more photos to show you all :-)

  16. Hi Helene, you seem to be determined to skip winter and your garden, too :-)! Love the first photo of the fresh green pushing through the soil (snowdrops?) and all the photos of your hellebores, especially your new header! Wishing you a Happy and Healthy New Year 2014, hopefully it will be a good garden year as well!

    1. Hi Christina, I have had more than enough of winter to last me a lifetime from my first 35 years of life living in Norway, if I can skip winter completely I would, but winter here in London tends to come late and with a bite so I do expect some frost and possibly some snow before it’s all over. It won’t last long though, a few days here and there if we continue to have a ‘normal winter’. At the moment the amount of rain we are having is the main problem, the flower beds are OK, but all my pots and containers are very water logged and there are is more heavy rain to come.

The first plant in the photos is a snowdrop yes, hope the first ones will flower soon. Wishing you a good garden year too, and a happy New Year!

    1. Happy New Year to you too, it might be a spring feeling in my garden here in London, but I can assure you, it’s not like that everywhere in Britain so don’t feel left out if your garden is mainly brown or even white!

    2. Our garden is green. We haven't had any snow yet! I wish we had just a bit... Sometimes, we have snow in March. Our winters have changed. I think, not only ours. It is sad. Anyway, I am looking forward to spring!!!

    1. Hi Nadezda, thanks for your well wishes, I am still recovering but getting better. We are having a dreadful weather these days with one storm after the other and lots of rain, but as soon as it gets a bit better I want to get out in the garden again – lots to do even at this time of year.

Crikey - your pictures reminded me of March/April here in my garden. It must be wonderful to have them so far on this early.

    1. Thanks Angie and Happy New Year to you too!
Gardening in London is quite fun, but sometimes we get a late winter period with frost that can ruin things. Last year my hellebores actually froze in February, that’s never happened before, but the cold snap lasted for weeks so I hope we don’t get that kind of weather again. At the moment I am more worried about all the rain we are getting, it has been incredible how much it has rained the last month!
Hope your garden is OK, no flood this winter I hope!

    1. Thanks Jennifer, it might not be spring quite yet, but with no frost the plants are encouraged to get started early. I still have to get through February and most of March before I can relax about frost, so most likely I will get some sooner or later! We have a miserable weather too, with lots of rain and very windy weather, but as it is mild my garden is happy at least :-)
